A Coastal Revival on Sullivan’s Island

Based in Mt. Pleasant, SC, Shem Creek Studios is known for designing timeless interiors that blend history with modern elegance. Their latest project—a stunning renovation on Sullivan’s Island—perfectly embodies their signature approach. Tasked with transforming a historic island home into a sophisticated yet relaxed retreat, the team carefully balanced the charm of the past with a fresh, coastal aesthetic.
The home’s island setting played a central role in shaping its design. “We really wanted the interiors to reflect the beauty of Sullivan’s Island—the soft blues, sandy neutrals, and organic textures you see all around,” says Lexi. “Our material selections, like driftwood, linen, and natural fibers, were all inspired by that effortless coastal feel.” The result is a space that feels deeply connected to its surroundings, where sunlight filters through wide-paneled windows, and the breeze carries the scent of salt air through thoughtfully curated rooms.
This project was more than just a renovation—it was a meticulous curation of old and new. “The home had such great bones,” Sabrina reflects. “It was important to us to honor the historic details while integrating a modern sensibility. The original ceiling beams and wood paneling brought so much character, so we embraced them and layered in contemporary elements to create a balanced, lived-in aesthetic.” The team worked closely with Sea Island Builders, selecting finishes and furnishings that would enhance the home’s original architecture while providing a sophisticated update.
One of the biggest challenges lay in reconfiguring the more compact bedrooms, a common characteristic of historic homes. “We had to get really strategic with the layouts,” Lexi explains. “Custom built-ins, multifunctional furniture, and thoughtful space planning allowed us to maximize every inch without sacrificing style or comfort.” The result is a home that feels effortlessly spacious, despite its historic footprint.
The use of color played a significant role in creating an inviting, cohesive atmosphere. “We pulled directly from nature—the ocean blues, the soft greens of the marsh, the golden tans of the sand,” says Sabrina. “These tones flow throughout the house, from cabinetry to textiles to tile, making the space feel harmonious and deeply rooted in its environment.” Soft, diffused lighting further enhances this effect, with a mix of natural light and carefully chosen fixtures shaping the home’s warm, intimate ambiance.
Perhaps the most rewarding part of the project was seeing the homeowners’ reaction. “They wanted a home that felt sophisticated but not fussy—somewhere they could truly relax and enjoy the island lifestyle,” Lexi shares. “Seeing them walk through the finished space and feel completely at home was the best part.”
This project is a testament to the power of thoughtful design—one that respects history while embracing modernity, creating a space that will stand the test of time. “There’s something so special about blending old and new,” says Sabrina. “It’s about creating a home that tells a story—one that’s both deeply personal and beautifully timeless.”
